The unbearable smell of petrol greeted us as we made our way to the boat, alongside with six other strangers. As the engine started, the smell seemed to disintegrate into the sweet air, something I'd not experienced in a long time. The trail of bubbles followed behind, and we set foot on the small island called Pulau Ubin within moments. The Welcome sign, the same stretch of jetty, the same bicycle shops, brought back nostalgic memories about this island years back. After getting the two-wheels, all of us, enthusiastically, moved our muscles and began the expedition. As usual, the black agents from earth came to assault us in the most subtle way, leaving red spots behind as evidence. Upslopes and downslopes, they never change. The speed of degradation was however, apparent. What we used to see as flora and fauna had all turned into a dull green of probably dead, if not, half-alive leaves.
Stray dogs still roam the streets at the entrance and some even caught on tape, committing indecent activities that amazed all of us. A hilarious yet painful sight it was, because we all perceived the manhood to be stuck inside the haven of the other canine. Moments later we witnessed an orgy by the same group of strays. What an amazing community.
As the hour hand went down the number 4, we returned our bicycles and waited for the boat back to Changi Village. Once again, the ferry ride. The journey back felt exceptionally long, while the five of us sat at the back of the boat, reminiscing, sleeping and staring into the waves caused by the rotaing blades.
Sometimes I think civilization is a scary thing, like a mathematics equation. Add in the buildings, subtract the trees, multiply population and divide the power. Will the future be as potrayed in Appleseed or Vexille? I really hope not.
